AP/CP General Surgical Pathologist Location: Salem, VA Schedule: Full-Time Days Rotating Weekends Job Description / Summary We are seeking a Board-Certified Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist (AP/CP) to join an established pathology practice in Salem, Virginia. This position offers exposure to a broad and diverse range of surgical pathology and cytology cases, including cases ranging from routine to highly complex. The ideal candidate will be comfortable independently signing out general surgical pathology, performing frozen sections, and providing clinical laboratory consultation. The practice receives significant case volume across gastrointestinal (GI), breast, genitourinary (GU), and general surgical pathology. Candidates with fellowship training or specialized expertise in Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology are especially encouraged to apply due to the volume and complexity of GI cases. The pathologist will work collaboratively with a small team of experienced pathologists and participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, shared call coverage, and pathology services supporting surrounding locations. Responsibilities Independently evaluate and sign out a broad range of general surgical pathology cases. Review and interpret complex surgical pathology specimens, including cases involving GI, breast, GU, and general surgery. Evaluate approximately 3,500-4,000 surgical pathology cases annually. Interpret approximately 700-1,000 non-GYN cytology cases annually. Perform intraoperative consultations and frozen sections as required. Perform and interpret rapid on-site assessments (ROSE) when needed. Provide clinical pathology consultation and support for laboratory-related questions. Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, including general and breast-focused conferences. Share weekday, after-hours, and rotating weekend call responsibilities with other pathologists. Provide weekend pathology coverage for affiliated satellite locations as scheduled. Collaborate closely with physicians, laboratory professionals, clinical teams, and other healthcare providers to support accurate and timely diagnoses. Maintain complete and accurate pathology reports and documentation. Follow applicable laboratory quality, safety, regulatory, and accreditation standards. Contribute to quality assurance, process improvement, and patient safety initiatives. Qualifications / Requirements MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school. Board Certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) required. Eligible for or currently holding an active Virginia medical license. Ability to independently sign out general surgical pathology cases. Experience performing frozen sections and intraoperative consultations. Ability to interpret non-GYN cytology specimens. Fellowship training or significant experience in Gastrointestinal (GI) and/or Liver Pathology preferred. 3+ years of pathology practice experience preferred. Strong diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
