Locums - Santa Maria, California, Oncology Job

Clinical Role

Join an established outpatient Oncology practice in Santa Maria, California, providing hematology and oncology consultative care during a period of increased patient volume. This locums opportunity offers a weekday clinic schedule, comprehensive support staff, and the opportunity to assist a practice while recruiting a permanent physician.

Assignment Details

Coverage Dates:

  • August 3-7, 2026
  • August 10-14, 2026
  • August 31-September 4, 2026
  • September 7-11, 2026

Schedule:

  • Tuesday-Friday
  • 8:00 AM-5:00 PM

Coverage Needed:

  • Approximately 16 target days per month
  • No weekends
  • Flexible scheduling available

Assignment Length:

  • Coverage until permanent physician recruitment is completed

Reason for Coverage:

  • Increased patient volume
  • Recruitment and hiring of a new permanent Oncology physician

Clinical Details & Responsibilities

Practice Setting:

  • Outpatient Clinic

Patient Volume:

Target daily volume:

  • 2 Oncology consults per day
  • 1 Hematology consult per day
  • 12-16 follow-up visits per day

Initial Ramp-Up Period:

  • First 4-6 weeks: all patients considered consults

Admissions:

  • Approximately 0-1 per day

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive evaluations of patient medical history, symptoms, and cancer risk factors
  • Diagnose and manage blood disorders and malignancies
  • Order and interpret diagnostic testing, including:
    • Complete blood counts
    • Blood smears
    • Genetic testing
    • Bone marrow biopsies
    • CT scans
    • MRI studies
    • PET scans
    • Lumbar punctures
  • Review biopsy results and collaborate with pathology teams
  • Determine cancer type, stage, and extent of disease
  • Explain diagnoses and treatment plans to patients and families
  • Order chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments as appropriate
  • Utilize clinical resources including NCCN, UpToDate, and Micromedex to support treatment decisions and medical necessity

Case Mix

General Oncology focus:

  • Breast oncology: approximately 30%
  • Prostate oncology: approximately 15%
  • OB/GYN cancers
  • Lung cancer
  • Colorectal cancer

Services Not Provided:

  • Induction therapies
  • Bi-specific therapies
  • Bone marrow transplant (BMT)
  • CAR-T therapy

Support & Technology

EMR Systems:

  • Onco EMR (Outpatient)
  • Cerner (Inpatient charting, laboratory results, diagnostic imaging)

Support Staff:

  • Scheduler
  • Clinical Supervisor
  • Medical Assistant
  • Nurse Navigation
  • Social Work
  • Triage Registered Nurse
  • Infusion Registered Nurses

Requirements

  • Board Certified in Oncology highly preferred
  • Board Eligible candidates considered if newly out of residency
  • Fellowship training required
  • Active California Medical License required
  • BLS required
  • DEA required

Credentialing
