Nephrology Physician

University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville is currently searching for a BC/BE Nephrologist with advanced fellowship training in Transplant Nephrology. This position is a full-time employed role with University Health Systems. The position will be shared 50/50 between the University transplant program and a Nephrology group practice. UT Medical Center is a 700-bed tertiary care center and the region s only academic center. Our Center for Transplant Services is the only kidney transplant program in East Tennessee. Serving as the only solid organ transplant program in the region, over 1,400 kidney transplants have been performed since the program s first transplant in 1985. The transplant center is certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is a member of the United Network for Organ Sharing for adult kidney transplant and living kidney donation.

The selected physician will evaluate end-stage renal disease patients to determine their suitability for renal transplantation, assist with in-hospital care of renal transplant patients in the peri-transplant period, perform consultation on inpatients with functioning kidney transplants, and conduct outpatient clinic follow-up. This individual will also serve as a liaison between our transplant program and referring institutions and nephrologists. There will be opportunity to pursue research interests, clinical teaching, and other clinical interests that the candidate may desire. This position will have very limited night or weekend coverage obligations.

The successful candidate will participate in quality and selection committees and assume a critical role with the multidisciplinary transplant team in collaboration with transplant surgeons, physicians, administrators, coordinators, and support staff. Our program emphasizes the development of outreach and living donor programs.

Requirements include:

• Successful completion of a Transplant Nephrology Fellowship prior to date of hire
• Board Certified/Board Eligible in Nephrology
• Desire and ability to participate in clinical research, teaching, and publications as well work in a traditional Nephrology office setting.

Responsibilities

• Provide inpatient and outpatient renal care, including AKI/CKD management, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, plasmapheresis, CRRT, and pre- and post-transplant follow-up
• Collaborate within a team of 3 Nephrologists and 1 Physician Assistant
• Share a 1:4 call rotation with every fourth weekend
• Benefit from 24/7 hospitalist support for admissions

Practice Overview

• Cover 1 hospital located in downtown Knoxville
• Round at 6 dialysis clinics throughout the area
• Opportunities for clinical research, teaching, and publication

Practice Volume

• 430 ESRD patients
• 1:4 week-long inpatient coverage, 1:4 weekends
• Non-inpatient weeks include office patients per day and one day each week with no scheduled patients
• APPs assist with dialysis rounding in the hospital

Hospital Features:
51 emergency room beds, 72 critical care beds (Cardiovascular ICU, Medical-Surgical ICU, Neuro-ICU), 17 surgery suites, and 5 cath labs. Specialized centers encompass a Heart Center, Pulmonary Hypertension Center of Excellence, and the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital. The hospital is certified by The Joint Commission and CARF, with multiple accreditations in stroke care, cardiology, bariatrics, orthopedics, and maternity services.
